Social media technology facilitates the sharing of ideas, thoughts, and information through the building of virtual networks and communities. David Amerland has said “social media is addictive precisely because it gives us something which the real-world lacks; it gives us immediacy, direction, and value as an individual.”
Social media has become an ultimate equalizer. It gives a voice and a platform to anyone willing to engage. Social media has always been attracting millions of people, creating an ever-expanding social web and evolving the way we communicate.

Online social media has been continuously undergoing changes. The concept of online social networking sites started as early as 1995. Tripod.com, The globe.com, and Geo cities were pioneers in building online communities by providing limited web hosting space in which users could create their own content. The early states of social networking sites offered features that promoted social interactions, such as chat, message boards, and classified sections they lacked an efficient social network structure. The next trend arrived by the end of 1990’s. 

The main features of this generation were the inclusions of personal profiles, the integration of social connections, and functions for searching friends on a network. The user’s engagement has improved greatly from early trends, in which communication with friends was easily accomplished through the usage of bulletin boards, email services and online instant messaging. 

Ultimately this created a community of users who could share similar interests. An early developer of this trend was SIX DEGREES which after being launched in 1997, reached one million users by 1998; unfortunately, it closed its services in 2000. Later Asian Avenue, Black planet, Migente, and Cyworld were created for specific ethnicities, Ryze and LinkedIn for professional and business networks and my space for entertainment and music.

The current trend of the social network started in 2004, with the emphasis being on both for a variety of applications to access it and renewing the content to improve user’s engagement. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter has changed how social networks perceived. Facebook is the leading social network with more than 750 million users. It is not only a web application that connects users’ profiles within the network, but it has also become a platform that can be integrated into web applications, allowing for marketing via the users. 

These social media networks can also be accessed through desktop applications, smartphone applications, and SMS. sharing photos, location, and status updates have been much easier. Timeline on twitter, newsfeed on Facebook or stream on Google+ had a huge impact on users. These networks constantly update the content and actively engages the users on the site.
